Woman, child’s rape enrages people on Twitter

On November 12, the Kashmore police arrested a suspect accused of kidnapping and gang-raping a woman and her five-year-old daughter. The news comes not long after a minor was raped in Punjab, earlier this week. Amid the growing outrage, Twitteratis reacted strongly against the Pakistani society, where regressive and violent mentalities prevail, where rape statistics are on the rise, and where perpetrators are spared jail because the proof of their crimes offends others' sensibilities.

Demand for reform:

While many Twitter users called for widespread reforms, some jaded individuals employed the hashtag of 'HangTheRapist' again:

Questioning the powerful:

While others were left speechless:

Many also lauded the police officer who arrested the rapist.

Translation:
ASI: He was not disclosing any names and kept saying he didn't have the girl. "Your friend has the girl who brought you here and sold her to you," but actually, he did not sell me the girl. They were friends. She said his [mobile] number is off. He gave another number and we tried that. This was Muhammad Rafiq’s number. He immediately connected us to the girl. She was crying and telling her mother they had tortured her. "I am dying, mama, please come to me," she said.

Mohammad Rafique asked her to bring another woman or he would kill her and her daughter. He then spoke to my daughter. He asked my daughter when she would come to him, from Karachi. As instructed, my daughter told him the time and location. He guided her to Kashmore on Domki Coach or Marri Coach and said that he will receive her. She told him that they were leaving now [for Kashmore].

He called her at 7 am and asked about her whereabouts. She replied that she was now in Kashmore, so he told her to come to City Park. I told my daughter to go to City Park with the woman. He entered the park and asked her to remove her veil. "I want to see you," he said. As she removed the veil, he asked the woman if the girl was Sindhi or not. The woman said she was. Then he asked my daughter to speak in Sindhi, but my daughter said that she was not Sindhi, she was Urdu speaking. And just as he angrily grabbed my daughter from her neck, we reached and grabbed him and brought him to the police station.

Anchor: How did you get this idea? Why did you risk the life of your own daughter?

ASI: The girl kept crying, she kept saying "Mama they have tortured me." But they forced the girl and she suddenly changed her statement. This story shattered me. All my family members were weeping. They [family] asked me to do something for the woman and the girl. So I took it as my moral responsibility to help the woman and her child.

Anchor: Did you top officials appreciate you after this?

ASI: Yes DIG, SP and SHO all congratulated and appreciated me. They are happy with my work. DIG from Karachi also spoke to me personally.

Women and children in Pakistan are subjected to alarming levels of sexual assaults, irrespective of their age, caste or class. According to a study by Human Rights Watch, there is a rape once every two hours, and a gang rape every eight hours.

A May 12, 2020 report of the ‘Gulf News’ states: 'An alarming increase has been observed in cases of crime/ violence against women and children in Pakistan during the first quarter of 2020. but the figures are considered the tip of the iceberg, with many victims too scared to come forward.'
